how I like read

I like reading but I don’t. the books I like to read are about true stories. I can read books that aren’t about or based on a true story but I am just not as interested. I like it when they make a movie after the book. Even though sometimes the movies leave out some of the things that were in the book or the names are changed. You have to have time to read. Time is hard to find in my life. I’m usually pretty busy. Its hard to have the time when you have five adults, an eight year old, and a six month old living under the same roof and three dogs. The house is non stop all day long. When I read I like to be in a quiet area or a room with music. I usually have to be comfortable to be able to read. At all different times through out the day is when I like to read because I don’t have the time to just sit down and read. So like an half hour here and there. I am a very slow reader. I am hoping when I get my glasses that gets a little better. I don’t want to read to fast and not be able to take in all the information. In the future I hope to have more time to read because I have heard about some good books and would like to get the chance to read them one day.

a letter to dave pelzer related to his books, a child called "it", the lost boy, and A man named dave

Dear Dave,
Your stories broke my heart when I read them. They were realistic and heart wrenching. You had to be a very strong and hopeful person to fight and not give up, to be able to move past the abuse and neglect and have a family of your own. I could not imagine a mother who could treat one of her children that way. Even after the books I still have questions. As of today do you still stay in contact with your brothers and other family members? Do you still think about all them years of abuse or have you been able to move past them? If you do still have contact with your brothers have any of them said whether or not they were abused emotionally or physically? I read these books and thought to myself how did he survive? Do you ever wonder why your dad didn’t follow through getting you away from her and why he didn’t take you with him when he left? Its sad to think that the society back then turned their heads and ignored abuse. These days the society are more involved and there are thousands of calls everyday to child abuse hotlines. I personally cringe when I hear in the newspaper or on TV about children being abused or even killed. It makes me want to become magical and erase that out of their life and give them a fresh start somewhere else, even though I know I cant. Thank you for taking the time to read this letter.

Sincerely,
Samantha Hedrick

my favorite books

I first read “A Child Called It” in seventh grade. It was the only one I had to read but I was so interested I had to read the other two books. These books are real and very descriptive. They are about a mother who abuses one of her sons. She was a alcoholic. In the first book she mixes ammonia and bleach in a bucket and put him in the bathroom and shut the door. It was like a gas chamber. She also threw a knife at him and stabbed him, and had told him she read an article about another mom making her child lay across a burning hot stove, and took him in the kitchen, turned on the gas stove and put his arm above the flame. The rest of the family came home or she would have made him put his whole body on the stove. He had to steal food, wear ratty clothes, and go to school with bruises all over him. His dad turned into an alcoholic and separated from his mother. The second book he went through foster homes. The third book he is the military. His father died and his real mom called to let his foster mom know. He got a phone call from his foster mom telling him about his father so he came home and stayed until his dad passed away. He also went to confront his real mom about her not going and seeing his dad in the hospital. He found out that one of his brothers was also in the military.
